Often referred to as; “the best managed commercial salmon fishery in BC” Area F Troll is a model Fishery. In Northern British Columbia there is a unique Commercial Salmon Troll Fishery that takes place every Summer from July through September. The Area F Troll Fishery is a small-scale Commercial Hook and Line Fishery supplying Canada and the world with all 5 species of salmon. Chinook, Coho, Sockeye, Chum and Pink salmon are landed into our Northern Ports as fresh (iced) and frozen (at sea). Our practices allow for little to no by-catch of non-target species as well our gear impact on marine habitat is low to non-existent.
The BC Northern Trollers Association is managed by 10 Directors (all active fisherman) and represents 240 licenses. Participants in this fishery are located in every small coastal community up and down our west coast. Area F Trollers pride themselves in harvesting top quality chinook and coho salmon surrounding the pristine waters off Haida Gwaii. We are Traceability pioneers in the Commercial Fishing Industry by having more than 15 years of science-based DNA sampling of our catch with dockside monitoring.
Our Harvesters are made up of primarily “owner-operator” Fisherman with many of the boats employing 2-4 deckhands. Our Fleet operates within Dixon Entrance, around Haida Gwaii and down the central coast to Calvert Island. Area F Trollers will continue to be stewards of British Columbia’s north and stay committed and accountable for keeping our fishery quality driven, science-based and sustainable.
